TROPIC and NEAR-TROPIC BIRD COLLECTION

Horned Grebe Horned Grebe- Podiceps auritus Horned Grebe- Podiceps auritus, Family Podicipedidae. Superficailly similar to the loons, grebes are smaller, with lobed toes and longer necks. Still with winter plummage. Forage by diving. Short, pointed bills. These birds were found on Acton Lake in SW Ohio on a frigid early March moning--the temperature was 18°F. (Photo: March 12, 2004)
