Female Common Goldeneye
Common Goldeneye- Bucephala islandica
| Common Goldeneye- Bucephala islandica, Order ANSERIFORMES - Family ANATIDAE - Subfamily Anatinae. The black-and-white Common Goldeneye is one of the last ducks to migrate south in fall. The eyes will be bright yellow in adult males and pale yellow to white in females. Male patterned in bold black and white, female smaller and gray with brown head. This female was found on Acton Lake in SW Ohio on a frigid early March moning--the temperature was 18°F. (Photo: March 12, 2004, Canon 10D, EF 300mm f/4L IS USM, 1.4x teleconverter EF ll lens)
