Ventral View Dunlin Flock
Dunlin- Calidris alpina
| Dunlins- Calidris alpinus, Family Scolopacidae, Order Charadriiformes (Shorebirds, Gulls, Auks and Allies). A life first for me! A flock of Dunlins came in to feed on a cold Sunday morning in mid-October at Acton Lake. Here, we have a ventral view as they came cruising in. These birds were flying evasively, which seemed very strange to me on the safe waters of Acton Lake. I later read that, in their northern breeding grounds, that merlins and falcons prey on these birds and are a significant cause of mortality. Hence, the evasive flight maneuvers!
