Sandhill Cranes Very Alert Sandhill Cranes- Grus canadensis Sandhill Cranes- Grus canadensis, Order Gruiformes, Family Gruidae, Subfamily Gruinae. These birds flew in at about 5:00pm on a cold, cloudy day cloudy day at Acton Lake just north of Oxford, Ohio. In this photo, the birds are alertly waiting for the next wave of cranes to land. They made a ton of noise! It was an amazing sight. "It is one of the few cranes in the world that is still common."
