Male Towhee Calling Male Eastern Towhee- Pipilo erythrophthalmus Male Eastern Towhee- Pipilo erythrophthalmus, Family EMBERIZIDAE. It's that time of year again! One of the largest sparrows. Diagnostics: Dark head and back (black in male, dark brown in female); white chest and belly, rufous sides and flanks. Male has black hood, back, wings and tail; female is dead-leaf brown where male is black. Winters in SW Ohio, migrates north during summer. Taken in the woods at Heuston Woods State Park on Acton Lake.
