Eastern Towhee Calling Male Eastern Towhee- Pipilo erythrophthalmus Male Eastern Towhee- Pipilo erythrophthalmus, Family EMBERIZIDAE. One of the largest sparrows. Diagnostics: Dark head and back (black in male, dark brown in female); white chest and belly, rufous sides and flanks. Male has black hood, back, wings and tail; female is dead-leaf brown where male is black. Winters in SW Ohio, migrates north during summer. This male was singing up a storm in Spring valley in SW Ohio!
