    Common Loon "Fishing"

    Common Loon in mid-molt- Gavia immer
    Common Loon- Gavia immer, Order GAVIIFORMES - Family GAVIIDAE. This lucky bird had just caught a fish! It was also in mid-molt. There are five species of loons in one genus. Medium to large fish eating birds. Capture prey by diving and pursuing fish underwater. Breeds in Alaska and Canada. This mid-molt common loon was found in the Brookville Reservoir in extreme western Indiana near the Ohio border.
