    Common Loon "Breeding Colors"

    Common Loon- Gavia immer
    Common Loon- Gavia immer, Order GAVIIFORMES - Family GAVIIDAE. There are five species of loons in one genus. Medium to large fish eating birds. Capture prey by diving and pursuing underwater. This loon, in full breeding splendor, was spotted in the open water in Acton Lake near the dam in Heuston Woods State Park. In full breeding color! Breeds in Alaska and Canada.
