Another Soaring Bald Eagle
Immature Bald Eagle- Haliaeetus leucocephalus
| Immature Bald Eagle- Haliaeetus leucocephalus, Order Falconiformes-Famliy Accipitridae, Subfamily Accipitrinae. Wow! What a day. Donna and I spotted at least five juvenile and subadult Bald Eagles near Quakertown SRA adjacent to the Dunlapsvile Causeway on Brookville Reservoir, Indiana on a beautiful Sunday in late February. We couldn't believe it! Many of the juveniles were circling overhead. Note the projecting Primary Feathers. From Cornell Lab "The national emblem of the United States, the Bald Eagle was threatened with extinction in the lower 48 states because of DDT (a type of pesticide) poisoning. Protection under the Endangered Species Act, together with reintroduction programs, brought populations up, and the species was reclassified as Threatened in 1995. By 1999, some were suggesting removing the eagle from the Endangered Species List."
