Amazing Chimney Swifts
Chimney Swifts- Chaetura pelagica
| Chimney Swifts- Chaetura pelagica, Order Apodiformes, Family Apodidae. What an amazing sight! Thousands of birds circling and descending into the Sawyer Smokestack as sunset approached. Behind Peabody Hall on Miami University's Western Campus, an inoperative smokestack at the university's steam plant serves as a roost for Chimney Swifts! A recent census (Sep 4, 5 and 6) resulted in counts of an average of 3112, 2933 and 2900! You have to see this to believe it!
