Shagbark Hickory (Carya ovata)
Shagbark Hickory Closeup
|
A very important fruit producer. Quite common in the preserve especially in the eastern woods. Most of our Shagbark Hickories are not massive with two wonderful exceptions. Here is a closeup of the bark. Leaves are alternate, pinnately compound and almost always have 5 leaflets. Leaves have fine serrations. Twigs have large terminal and lateral buds. Male and female flowers occur on the same tree. Fruits are very large. Branches are alternate.
