A member of the elm family, has alternate, asymmetrical leaves with serrations. Bark is warty (bumpy). Larger Hackberry bark at the base becomes platy. Important fruit producer for birds. Leaves often have galls.
Present, but not common in the preserve. The largest hackberries can be found in th eastern woods.
